A new therapy being tested in the laboratory, where white blood cells reprogrammed to attack cancer cells, leading to the deaths of three patients. As a result, US authorities have ordered a temporary ban on testing.
This therapy, called JCAR015, uses genetically programmed immune cells, known as T CAR to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adults, a cancer of imuntar system.
In a study conducted earlier this year, teminal 94 percent of patients who were treated with this technique, had positive results.
It is an incredibly promising new technique in the fight against cancer, but the loss of three lives already makes it stop and not tested further.
Patients were three under 25 - years and died during the second phase of treatment, when programmed cells were hitting white ones.
The reason, as the portal writes "Gizmodo" was the accumulation of excess fluid in the brain of patients. In all cases, the death came after patients had used chemotherapy drug fludarabine, while subjected to treatment.
